A Love for Mahjong and the Community

What is Mahjong?

Glad you asked! Mahjong is a tile game that originated in China in the 1700s/1800s. In the 1920s an American businessman, named Joseph Babcock, brought his own version of the game to America. In the 1930s, a group in New York formed the National Mah Jongg League, Inc. (NMJL) to come up with rules to standardize the game.

Now we call this version “American Mahjong” and I follow the rules set forth by the NMJL when I teach. After you learn from me, no matter where you play in the country, you will be playing the correct way!

You usually play mahjong with a group of 4 people. The tiles are dealt and your goal is to match your tiles to one line on the NMJL card. The card changes every year! This means each year you have a new challenge! I think this is partly why research shows that playing mahjong can help stave off dementia. This game is so fun and honestly kind of addicting! So what are you waiting for?!?!

Mother Knows Mahj Gives Back

Mahjong has deep roots in philanthropy , and I try to carry that forward. Almost every dollar from lessons, events or referral purchases helps sustain my business and support local causes. Whether it’s buying tables for local charity events, donating lesson or gifting tile sets for silent auctions, your dollars are being put into supporting your community.

Thanks to your support, we’ve contributed to: One Voice, CASA of the South Plains, Kerr County Flood Relief Fund, LHUCA, Lubbock Symphony Guild, Early Learning Centers of Lubbock, Lubbock-Cooper Education Foundation, Lubbock Women’s Club, Tahoka Livestock Syndicate.

Let’s play, connect, and give back —one tile at a time.
